Welcome

We are the owners of a 1.4 hectare block of land on the Central Coast.

The site includes areas of rainforest which have been badly overrun by non-native plants. Our project is to restore the rainforest and to build an environmentally sustainable house on the site.

This blog records the bush regeneration work we are undertaking and the progress on building the house.

Photos from week starting 19th July

It is now a year since my first blog!

The following photos show where we were then and where we are now.

This week we have had an incredible amount of rain (200mm) but this doesn't seem to have had too much of an impact on progress.  It has been exciting to see the floor tiling commence and a relief that the internal wet plastering has been completed.

The tiles in the bathroom are natural stone Mercury Basalt.  The look fantastic.

The floor tiles in the Ensuite bathroom

The 600 x 600 floor tiles in the Dining Room also look great

The walls around the fireplace have been plastered

The plastered wall in the study (the wall backs onto the lounge wall).  The holes in the skirting board are for fresh air into the fireplace

Now that study and bedroom walls have been plastered the reverse brick veneer wall construction along the east side is complete.

Piles of tiles in the hallway

The skirting boards are being installed and you can see the shadow line detail between the board and the plasterboard

The scaffolding along the north facade has been taken down and we can now see the way that the light illuminates the lounge.  There are lots of interesting shadows

The builder has made a mock-up of the rainwater hopper as a template for the actual piece that will be made from metal

Photos from week starting 12th July

Visible progress has picked up again this week with the first coat of paint going onto the external  walls and most of the internal walls.

Also, after a considerable amount of thought we have decided not to remove the storm beading that was fixed between the roof soffits and the walls.  The consequences in terms of time and cost outweighed the aesthetic benefits.

Photos from week starting 4th July

There did not seem to be a huge amount of visible progress inside the house this week, mainly because most of the work involved plastering the corners and joints of the gyprock.  Still outside work carried on with the guttering and the solar panels.

The gutter guards have been fixed on the west side, south end

and at the north end

The handrail has been taken down around the pool in preparation for the swimming pool internal finishes

A couple of problems have emerged during the week.  They might seem small but once we noticed them we need to do something about them

The timber storm bead between the roof soffit and the external wall is at odds with the need for a clean right angle joint

You can see the difference in level between the corrected ceiling level of the back door alcove and the cupboard opening
We bought some tester pots of the colours that we want to use inside the house.  On the right is the colour of

Photos from week starting 27th June

The majority of the work this week has been in installing and plastering more gyprock on the walls and ceilings.  The most exciting developments have been the installation of some of our solar panels and the news that our second shipment of windows (for the lounge) have left Sweden.

If you look carefully at this view of the hallway you will see that the alcove ceilings have been lowered and line up with  the top of the hallway cupboard

Corner beading has been installed around the window opening in the lounge

The PV panels look great. They are Q Smart 90 panels

It was a beautiful day for sitting out on the terrace
